Sustainable Construction at Ursuline Academy

LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) school buildings conserve natural resources and contribute to a healthier learning environment. Here are some of the sustainable measures used in the construction of the French Family Center and new Music Building:

Sustainable site development
Soil erosion controls; highly reflective finishes for roofing and all site landscapes to reduce heat "islands"; interior/exterior lighting systems that minimize sky glow; development of a master plan for sustainability in future development.

Water conservation (More than 50% savings)
Native, drought-tolerant plants and highly efficient irrigation systems for landscaping; low flow fixtures, other conservation measures.

Energy efficiency (25% savings)
Mechanical systems designed to optimize energy performance and environmental/economic impact; solar shades to reflect light into classrooms and protect large expanses of glass from direct sunlight; sourcing a portion of electricity from renewable resources.

Materials selection and waste management
Recycled or salvaged 70% of all non-hazardous construction/demolition debris to divert from landfills or incinerators, including over 2000 tons of wood, paper, concrete, brick, and metal materials; use of building products that incorporate recycled content; materials sourced from within 500 miles of building site.

Indoor environmental air quality
Use of low emitting adhesives, paints, furnishings, and building materials; HVAC protection, other indoor air quality construction methods.

“At Ursuline, we as a community have made a commitment to grow in our understanding and practice of sustainability campus-wide.”
